In 2021, more and more private investors were caught up in the stock market fever, and this trend will continue in 2022, according to market observers. In addition to the broad market and ESG products, special themes such as digitalization and biotech are also in demand.
4 January 2022. Frankfurt (Börse Frankfurt). "These ETF tips are worth cash", "ETF tips: How to earn a little more every month", plus a series with ETF pope Gerd Kommer - ETFs have arrived in the mainstream, even in the Bild newspaper. "Private investors are fully in the market," Frank Mohr of Société Générale also reports. Young people in particular have discovered the stock market for themselves, he says. "And most new customers are not interested in gambling, but in long-term saving and investing." That will continue to support the ETF market, he said.
ESG soon "quite normal
According to market observers, the trend toward sustainable ETFs is likely to continue or even increase. In 2021, ESG products accounted for €57.3 billion of the €110.2 billion in total inflows into equity ETFs in Europe (through the end of November), according to issuer Amundi - more than half. "This will remain a big theme," Mohr says.
Michael Jantzi, managing director of Morningstar subsidiary Sustainalytics, expects ESG to become increasingly "normal." In 2022, he says, while sustainability considerations will increase in financial disclosure, oversight, risk and regulatory frameworks, there won't be as much talk about ESG and sustainable finance. "Increasingly, we will refer to our work simply as investment or finance. There won't be a need for a prefix as sustainability becomes the norm."
Clean energy ETF among most traded
Of the more than 1,600 ETFs listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, 446 now account for more than a quarter of the sustainable category. These also account for an increasingly large share of trading. The iShares Global Clean Energy (IE00B1XNHC34) even ranks third on the list of 2021 most traded ETFs on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange - just behind the iShares Core DAX (DE0005933931) and the iShares Core MSCI World (IE00B4L5Y983). There was also an extreme amount of turnover in SRI variants of the MSCI World, particularly in the UBS MSCI World Socially Responsible (LU0629459743) and the iShares MSCI World SRI (IE00BYX2JD69).
"Health and technology as the most important themes"
According to Amundi, sector and theme ETFs were also very popular in 2021, with inflows of €29.6 billion out of a total of €110.2 billion in equity ETFs in Europe. Among thematic ETFs, the climate theme was also top of the list, followed by finance, IT, healthcare and energy. Frank Mohr sees two major themes that are becoming increasingly important: Health and Technology. "This includes, for example, biotechnology, the classic pharmaceutical industry, battery manufacturing, cyber security, cloud computing."

Fabian Wörndl of Lang & Schwarz expects continued high inflows into water ETFs such as the Lyxor MSCI Water ESG Filtered (FR0010527275), which was already very popular in 2021. Commodity ETFs and ETCs would also remain in demand, as would specialty themes like battery production, such as with WisdomTree Battery Solutions (IE00BKLF1R75). "And if cannabis is legalized in Germany, demand for cannabis ETFs should also pick up."
Top-selling sector ETFs on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2021 were two bank trackers (DE0006289309, DE000A0F5UJ7), followed by iShares Automation & Robotics (IE00BYZK4552) and - due to the rapid rise in oil prices - iShares Stoxx Europe 600 Oil & Gas (DE000A0H08M3).
Smart beta: More for professionals?
Smart beta ETFs are no longer quite as popular, with popularity ebbing from mid-2021, according to Amundi. According to Amundi, a total of 13.9 billion euros flowed into these products in Europe by the end of November. Value and quality ETFs were particularly well received, while minimum volatility products were mostly on the sell lists. According to Mohr, private investors are also more interested in theme products than in smart beta products. "Theme ETFs are easier to understand. Smart beta strategies are more likely to be followed by professionals."
Bonds: Inflation hedged, please!
In the bond ETF business, Chinese government bonds were a real hit in 2021, according to Amundi, but high inflows were also seen in eurozone and U.S. corporate bonds and inflation-linked products. Mohr believes the trend into inflation-linked bond ETFs is likely to continue. "Inflation is likely to stay longer than central banks expect."
Cryptos: more interest, more products
A lot of money will continue to flow into crypto products, according to traders. "More products will probably be launched, even on smaller cryptocurrencies," says Fabian Wörndl.
On the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, investors* can now bet on 35 crypto ETNs, from seven providers. The ETNs reflect the price developments of Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Cardano, Ethereum, Litecoin, Polkadot, Solana, Stellar, Tezos and TRON as well as four baskets of cryptocurrencies.
